A freshwater species thought to be nearly extinct has been spotted after more than 10 years without a sighting. Researchers from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources made the discovery, finding specimens of a federally endangered species.

The species has distinctive shell features. It was found in the Ocmulgee River in mid-August. A biologist felt a large mussel while digging in the riverbed in early July, leading to the discovery.
