The Georgia Aquarium's oldest African penguin has passed away at the age of 40. The penguin, named Charlie, was exceptionally long-lived, as most African penguins only live between 10 to 20 years. Charlie was humanely euthanized due to health issues related to his advanced age.

He had been bonded with another African penguin, Lizzy, for over 30 years and the pair had fostered many chicks. The aquarium has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to care for Charlie and acknowledged the dedication of their animal and veterinarian teams in providing him with exceptional care. Further details about Charlie's life and legacy are available from the Georgia Aquarium.
